Rockland Business Group CEO Slams Congestion Pricing Plan

The head of a local business networking group is no fan of the “congestion pricing” scheme that the MTA is likely to implement before the end of next year. Al Samuels is the CEO of the Rockland Business Association, and he says if it is eventually implemented, he’d be less likely to venture into the city south of 60th street…

The MTA’s controversial Central Business District Tolling Program, more commonly known as “congestion pricing,” could force a massive toll on Rockland and other west-of-Hudson commuters and others going south of 60th street in Manhattan. The plan would help encourage commuters to use mass transit, and fund repairs and upgrades on MTA service lines.

Rockland Honors Gold Star Families at Ceremony in Haverstraw

Rockland County honored local Gold Star families at a Remembrance Ceremony Friday at Haverstraw Bay Park. The ceremony honored residents who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Gulf War and the War on Terror and their families. Rockland County Executive Ed Day said he knows the roller coaster of emotions military families can go through, both as a former police officer and as the parent of two sons serving in the armed forces…

Former Spring Valley Police Chief, Purple Heart-recipient, and Vietnam veteran, Howard Goldin, awarded this year’s honor to the family of the first Rocklander and New Yorker to lose his life during Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm in December 1990, Navy Seaman 22 year-old Gilbert Fontaine…   

A memorial honoring Fontaine and other victims of the Gulf War and the War on Terror is located in Haverstraw Bay Park.

Suicides, Drug Overdoses on Rise in NY Seniors in Last Ten Years

Older people in New York are dying from drug overdose or suicide at much higher rates compared with a decade ago. That’s according to the latest America’s Health Rankings Senior Report from UnitedHealthcare. The report found in New York, suicides have increased nearly 10 percent, frequent mental distress is up about nine percent and drug deaths among people 65 and older have doubled in the last decade. United Healthcare’s Dr. Rhonda Randall says social distancing requirements during COVID took a particularly heavy toll on older people…

New York ranked 32nd overall in the report. There is some good news – between 2011 and 2020, the number of adults reporting high health status went up 30 percent in the state. Since 2016, there are also nearly 30 percent more home health aides able to provide care to older New Yorkers.

Saturday Marks 10th Anniversary of North Rockland Mother’s Murder, Suspect Still at Large

Tomorrow marks ten years since a North Rockland mother was killed, allegedly by her father-in-law, and he’s been on the run ever since. Eugene Palmer remains on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. Stony Point supervisor Jim Monaghan says despite various health issues, the FBI still considers the now 83 year-old Palmer to be armed and dangerous… 

Tammy Palmer was allegedly ambushed and shot by her father-in-law following a heated confrontation after she had walked her children to the morning school bus stop. He was believed to have fled into Harriman State Park but the trail grew cold and he’s never been found. Anyone with information on Palmer’s whereabouts is asked to contact the bureau at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

Not-for-Profit Holds Confidence-Building Program for Middle- and High-School Girls in Orangeburg

An area after-school program for middle and high school girls is holding a special Wellness Day and Fitness Fundraiser event in Orangeburg tonight. The mission of the non-profit Wonder Girls program is to build confidence, leadership, community and business skills. Wonder Girls co-founder, Natalie Maniscalco, says it’s critical these young women learn the importance of self-care, mental health, nutrition and exercise…
