A Rockland County teen was killed yesterday morning after an accident on the Thruway in Clarkstown. New York State Police say 19 year-old Rashid Hopson of Spring Valley was pronounced dead at the scene by Rockland’s Medical Examiner after the car in which he was a back seat passenger struck another car on I-87 northbound. Police say a Honda Accord was driven by 18 year-old Alon Forbes of the Bronx. He struck the rear of a Suburu Outback driven by 59 year-old Terri Kugler of Hawthorne, New Jersey. Kugler was not injured, but 18 year-old Ashawn Duncan of Spring Valley, the front seat passenger of the Honda, was reported to be in critical condition at Nyack Hospital. Three others suffered minor injuries and were treated and released. The crash is under investigation.
Spring Valley Police Investigate Drowning Incident at Memorial Park Pond
Spring Valley Police need your help after a man died jumping into the pond at Memorial Park. Police say the incident occurred shortly after noon on Thursday. They were responding to reports the man was swimming and went under but never resurfaced. Dive teams from Piermont and Thiells fire departments were able to find the unidentified man but he was unresponsive. The victim is described as a Hispanic male, around 40 years old and a resident of Spring Valley. If you have any information, contact the Spring Valley Police Department at 845-356-7400.
Tensions Boil Over in Clarkstown Over School District’s COVID Masking Plans
The struggle between getting kids back into schools full-time safely boiled over Thursday in Clarkstown….
That is from a video of Thursday’s Clarkstown Board of Education meeting that was posted to Facebook in a group called “Clarkstown Community-UNCENSORED.” The meeting ended before it even began after residents were angered over the district’s masking policy for the upcoming school year, which requires masks in schools and on buses when the school year begins, citing CDC recommendations. The first day of school in Clarkstown is Wednesday September first.
Meanwhile, the number of COVID cases continues to rise in Rockland. We’re now at 733 active cases. On Wednesday we had 606 cases. The number of deaths remains steady at 970.
Rockland’s Haitian Community Looks to Help as Country Reels from Massive Earthquake
As if the country wasn’t already reeling from the assassination of its president last month, the death toll has now reached over 1,200 following a massive earthquake that struck Haiti on Saturday. NPR reports rescue crews continue to dig through the rubble, this as Tropical Depression Grace threatens to bring heavy rains and potential mudslides today.
