Third Vote Set for Budget Vote in Rockland County Legislature for New Office of Building and Codes

February 3, 2022 by Jeff Lewis

Another vote has been set for next week following Tuesday’s failure by the legislature to authorize the county executive’s spending plan to create an office of Building and Codes to take over that function for the village of Spring Valley. While the law passed unanimously, three legislators left the meeting early so the vote on the budget stalled. Justin Schwartz heads up the Rockland Illegal Housing Task Force, and he called on the three to resign, calling their actions “failed justice for Jared Lloyd” and a slap in the face of every county volunteer firefighter and Rockland resident…

Rockland County Executive Ed Day says a Declaration of Procurement Emergency may be needed to let the County’s Director of Purchasing release the funding required to hire building inspectors and code enforcement officials…

Callers to “The Morning Show” yesterday said they were disturbed by what they perceived to be the legislators’ lack of concern for Rocklanders’ safety…

The Legislature put out a statement late yesterday afternoon, and said of the three legislators who left the meeting early, Ramapo’s Alden Wolfe was given permission to be excused early for a personal matter, Clarkstown’s Aney Paul said she had technical issues during the meeting, and Ramapo’s Toney Earl had undergone a medical procedure earlier in the day, but was able to sign-in to vote to create the office, but not on the budget. WRCR reached out to them for further comment, but we did not hear back. The state-authorized move to take over the village building department comes in the wake of last year’s fatal fire at the Evergreen Adult Home in which a resident and Spring Valley firefighter Jared Lloyd were killed. Two former Spring Valley building department employees and four others have been charged in connection with the blaze.
