A Stony Point man has been arrested and charged with an accident last March in which a nine year-old student ended up pinned underneath a minivan. Ramapo Police say 61 year-old Edgar Hawkins was driving a school bus that the Cherry Lane Elementary School student had just exited, at the intersection of Pioneer Avenue and North Airmont Road. It appeared that he had been struck by a pickup truck and thrown underneath the minivan. A Ramapo Police officer on patrol and several bystanders were able to lift the front end of the minivan and free the child who was treated at Westchester Medical Center. He was listed at the time in stable condition, his condition now is unknown. The owner of the truck involved stayed on-scene and cooperated with police. Hawkins has been charged with Reckless Endangerment and Endangering the Welfare of A Child, both Class A misdemeanors. He was released and is due back in Ramapo Justice Court at a future date.
