Spring Valley Mayor Wants Code Enforcement Responsibilities Back

July 24, 2023 by Jeff Lewis

The mayor of Spring Valley wants the village to get back its power to inspect properties and again be the enforcers of state fire and safety codes. That’s according to the Journal News. The mayor argued Thursday at a press conference that the village did better than the Rockland County government. The county was authorized by the state in 2021 to take over, after it was determined the village wasn’t up to the job. Rockland County Executive Ed Day says the state was correct in taking away the village’s code enforcement responsibilities…

Simon cited the fatal fire from last May in which five people died in a two-family house on Lake Street as proof the county was failing in its role. However, at the time, the county was only permitted to inspect single-family homes. The county has since gotten permission to inspect other properties owned by the same landlord, and has cited him with hundreds of violations.
