Should NY Divide into Two States, the City and Upstate? Area Lawmaker says Both Need Each Other

The idea of dividing New York State into two states – upstate and downstate…comes around every now again. One of the problems is deciding where do Hudson Valley counties such as Westchester, Rockland and Orange belong? Are they upstate or downstate? Rockland Assemblyman Karl Brabanec, who represents portions of western Ramapo and Orange County, says both areas need each other, though sometimes it can feel lopsided…

According to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, for at least 24 of the past 28 years, New York lawmakers, mostly upstate Republicans, have introduced bills that propose splitting New York into two separate states. Those bills have all died in committee.
