There are eight names are currently listed on the Monument, including Seaman Gilbert Fontaine and Staff sergeant Tatiana Dees who died during Desert Storm; Corporal Manuel Lopez III, Captain Phillip Esposito, Corporal Steve Vahaviolos and Corporal Justin Rivero Garcia who died in Iraq; and Sergeant Edward Bolen and Major Thomas Kennedy who died in Afghanistan. The monument is located in Haverstraw Bay County Park. Various landmarks around the state, including the Tappan Zee Bridge and One World Trade Center, were lit in gold yesterday to honor Gold Star Families.
