It was a nail-biter in the critical special Congressional election held yesterday for New York’s 3rd District, covering parts of Long Island and Queens, to finish the term of disgraced former Republican Representative, George Santos. With 94 percent of the votes counted, the projected winner, former seat-holder, Democrat Tom Suozzi, had 54 percent to Nassau County Legislator, Republican Mazi Pilip’s, 46 percent. Rockland Congressman, Republican Mike Lawler of the 17th District said yesterday, just as voting was getting underway, that the vote could give some insight as to the direction the country will go in the general election in November …
Once Suozzi is sworn in, the Republicans’ House majority will fall to 219-213. Also yesterday, the second House vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over issues with the U.S.-Mexico border passed by just a single vote, after failing last week. CNN reported it’s not clear whether the Senate will hold a trial or even consider the Mayorkas impeachment when they return from recess.
