It’s Memorial Day weekend and for some it’s a time filled with barbecues and sales on mattresses and cars and stuff, but for most it’s a time to reflect on those who served in the military and made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Mark Woods is the director of the Joseph P. Dwyer Vet-to-Vet Veteran Program at BRIDGES, and he says he’s thankful for all the ceremonies held around the county to remember those who served……
Woods is the host of “Thank You for Your Service” heard right here on WRCR the 4th Monday of each month. A Rockland tradition is the lighting of four watchfires by the Vietnam Veterans of America, honoring those soldiers serving abroad and the troops who didn’t return home. The watchfire ceremonies start Monday night, that’s May 29th, at 11pm, with the lightings taking place at midnight. They’ll burn for 24 hours. Three fires will be held at Eugene Levy Memorial Park on Route 45 in Pomona, the top of Clausland Mountain in Orangeburg, and on the east end of the Piermont Pier. Haverstraw supervisor Howard Phillips says the fourth one will be at the town’s Bowline Point Park…
Anyone wishing to retire flags can do so at any of the watchfire locations.
