Rockland State Senator: Bring Back Commuter Trains on Conrail Line

July 26, 2022 by Jeff Lewis

A local state lawmaker says the state should consider bringing passenger service back to tracks currently used in Rockland for freight purposes, to help bring more efficient public transportation to county residents. Rockland state senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick says federal funding would be required to add commuter trains to the Conrail line that currently cuts through the heart of the county…

Reichlin-Melnick opposes the congestion pricing plan that the MTA is expected to put in effect in the not-too-distant future. During the gubernatorial debates in June, Governor Kathy Hochul indicated congestion pricing would not be implemented within the next year. Unlike other communities surrounding the city, Rockland lacks a one-seat ride into Manhattan.
