A bill passed by the state legislature that would switch local elections to even years and take place at the same time as national elections could be signed by the governor in the next few days. That’s according to one local state lawmaker. Supporters of the bill, which is sponsored by Orange County State Senator James Skoufis, say it would save money and increase voter turnout for local elections. 99th district Assemblyman Chris Eachus, who covers Stony Point and portions of Orange County, says he’s been told the Governor will sign the bill soon…
Rockland’s State Senator Bill Weber of the 38th District voted against the bill, and hopes Governor Kathy Hochul declines to sign it into law…
The bill would apply to many, but not all, town and county elections across the state. The proposal does not apply to city elections because they are required by the constitution to be held in odd-numbered years.
