Rockland Officials Slam Legislature Majority for Nixing Proposed 1/2 Percent Sales Tax Increase

Elected officials and others have been lining up to slam the legislature’s majority for failing to support the county executive’s temporary sales tax boost to help shore up the budget for 2021. The legislature last week turned back Rockland County Executive Ed Day’s suggested ½ percent sales tax increase in a 9-8 vote along party lines, and put off debate over the future of the Sain Building. Day says what the legislative majority did was fiscally irresponsible…

Al Samuels heads up the Rockland Business Association, and he says absent federal assistance, local taxes somehow, some way, will have to go up…

In a press release last week, Legislature chairman Alden Wolfe suggested renegotiating vendor contracts and concessions from unions, and increasing the property tax instead. We reached out to him for additional comment but have not heard back.
