A local fire department could become a test case for other local firehouses that are looking to bring in some paid staff to help with low volunteer numbers. The Tallman Volunteer Fire Department is looking to hire an assistant chief, to be the first paid position ever in Rockland’s fire service. According to the Tallman Fire Department’s online job posting, the position requires a civil service exam in March, among other necessary qualifications, and it will pay about $104,000 a year for a 40-hour work week. The position would be financed by taxpayers from within the Tallman fire district.
