Rockland County Executive Releases 2021 Budget Proposal with No Layoffs, but Property Taxes Could Rise

October 2, 2020 by helpdesk1

Rockland’s County Executive unveiled his proposed 2021 budget and it doesn’t include any layoffs, but there is a property tax increase. In a press conference yesterday, Ed Day said the $729 million budget proposal comes in the shadow of an unprecedented pandemic that has wreaked havoc on sales tax revenue and the local economy, so savings had to be found somewhere…

The proposal calls for raising county property taxes by an average of $34 per homeowner per year. 154 jobs will go unfilled, potentially resulting in slower services for various programs including social services. In a statement, Legislator Michael Grant, who chairs the Budget & Finance Committee, said if they work together they can come up with a bipartisan plan. The legislature will start to review the proposal, hold a public hearing and then vote on it in December.
