Real Estate Industry Grappling with New Rent Laws in NY

Criminal justice reforms aren’t the only new laws in New York that have people scratching their heads. Last week came word that the real estate industry is in for a big change – that renters cannot be charged more than $20 in fees when applying for an apartment. Naomi Streicher of Realty Teams says the Department of State’s interpretation of a new law passed in June doesn’t make sense…

The Real Estate Board of New York indicated last week they may challenge the ruling in court. Tenant advocacy groups applauded the new interpretation. A judge reportedly issued a temporary restraining order Monday, blocking the new law’s interpretation.
