The town of Orangetown is moving forward to join the state’s new law that would give volunteer EMS and firefighters a break on their taxes, but whether they move fast enough to qualify for the next fiscal year remains to be seen. Ramapo, Haverstraw and Clarkstown have already approved the law. Each municipality, including the Rockland County government, all five towns and their villages, and the school districts, can opt into the bill, which would give a tax break to volunteer firefighters and EMS workers in New York State. The deadline for volunteers to apply for this coming year, 2024, is March 1st.
