Birthdays, gender reveal parties, graduations – there are many occasions people use as an excuse to buy those shiny, metallic-looking balloons to help people celebrate something. Pretty, sure. But according to O&R spokesman Mike Donovan, also very dangerous…
Donovan says you shouldn’t tie metallic balloons to a child’s wrist or a dog’s collar. If the balloon contacts electricity, that charge can travel through the balloon and into the child or dog, causing serious injury or death. O&R also suggests keeping metallic balloons indoors, don’t release helium-filled metallic balloons into the air – especially when tied in bundles – as they can easily become entangled in power lines. If they stray into power lines, don’t be a hero and get them yourself. Call O&R at 1-877-434-4100 and report the incident so they can safely deal with the situation.
