New York legislators gave themselves a 29 percent pay raise yesterday, increasing salaries from $110,000 to $142,000 starting next year. The move would make them the highest paid state legislators in the nation. Hudson Valley Senator, Republican Sue Serino, who covers portions of Dutchess and Putnam Counties, voted against the bill, calling it “selfish” and “despicable”…
The bill passed in the Senate by a 33-23 vote, and the Assembly by an 81-52 margin. AP reported lawmakers now also face restrictions on how much they can make from other employment. Outside income would be capped at $35,000 starting in 2025, not including pay from military service, retirement plans or investments. Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, has said she supports the idea of a raise for the Legislature, but hasn’t said whether she would sign the bill.
