New York has taken another step toward making an area state highway part of the federal interstate highway system. The move would help relieve congestion in Orange and Sullivan Counties by adding a third lane to Route 17, and it’ll include interchange improvements, bridge replacements and expanded park and ride facilities, including EV charging systems. Work has begun on a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the upgrade of the roadway to interstate standards, with public outreach and involvement efforts expected to begin early next year. The state will study the project’s impact on air quality, and local wetlands.
