A Spring Valley man will spend the next 7½ years in prison after being found guilty of first-degree assault for shooting a woman in the arm. Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh says 22-year-old Kevin Castillo shot the woman through the window of her home in Spring Valley last March. Walsh says Castillo had climbed a fire escape to her window in the early morning hours of March 24th, and when she told him to leave, he shot her. Castillo fled but was located a short time later and arrested without incident. Spring Valley Police found the victim, and she was taken to Westchester Medical Center and underwent surgery to remove the bullet from her arm. Castillo also faces five years of parole.
NJ Man Killed in Accident on Thruway
A 42-year-old New Jersey man was killed last Wednesday after he was struck by a tractor trailer on the Thruway in Orange County north of Harriman. New York State Trooper Tara McCormick says the collision happened just after midnight when a 30-year-old Albany man, who was not identified, driving a tractor-trailer southbound on I-87 sideswiped another tractor that had stopped on the right shoulder. 42-year-old Jose Payano of Plainfield was outside of his truck for reasons unknown, and was struck by the tractor-trailer. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The first truck rolled over, blocking all southbound lanes for hours. The driver was taken to Garnett Medical Center in Middletown for non-life-threatening injuries. He was ticketed due to the crash.
