News Briefs: NAACP Slams Rockland D.A. For Evergreen Plea Deal

August 11, 2023 by Jeff Lewis

Area NAACP leaders are slamming the no-jail plea deal for the two Rabbis who admitted causing the fatal Spring Valley adult home fire two years ago. The Journal News says Willie Trotman of the Spring Valley NAACP, Nicole Hines of Nyack’s branch, and Wilbur Aldridge of the Mid-Hudson Westchester branch, all asked Rockland’s District Attorney Tom Walsh and County Court Judge Kevin Russo, asking Walsh to defend his decision and judge Russo to reconsider his support for the proposed sentence. 35 year-old Spring Valley firefighter Jared Lloyd and 79 year-old Oliver Hueston, a resident of the Evergreen Adult Home, died in the blaze.

Missing Suffern Woman Found
A Suffern woman is recovering after going missing late Wednesday while out for a walk. The 76-year-old was reported missing by her husband. Suffern Police were assisted by the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office bloodhound, K9 Galli, along with Deputy Sheriff Brian Neary, and they were able to find the woman who had fallen in a wooded area. She was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital as a precaution.

Fate of Pot Dispensaries to be Decided by Judge
A New York judge could decide today whether cannabis dispensaries can open in the state. News 12 says a lawsuit filed by four disabled veterans claims the state’s Office of Cannabis Management and the Cannabis Control Board’s licensing system favored people with prior drug convictions or certain non-profit groups, violating the state’s constitution. The courts Monday ordered a halt to the granting of new retail licenses and operational approvals to companies already licensed. The judge today could keep the ban in place, change the rules, or pull it entirely.

Road Work in Rockland
The Rockland County Highway Department is paving Old Tappan Road from Western Highway to the New Jersey border today. Assistant General Foreman Matt Tibbetts says they’re also doing Townline Road from Earhardt to Middletown Road, and today milling continues on Little Tor Road between Germonds and Red Hill Roads. Detour information is posted. Tibbetts suggests you avoid all those areas.
