News Briefs: Gym Coach Sentenced, Person Killed by Train, Pedestrian Dies in Thruway Accident, Clarkstown Amends Law Targeting Bus Companies

February 28, 2024 by Jeff Lewis

A former Rockland gymnastics coach was sentenced yesterday to 10 years of probation after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a child. That’s according to News 12. 73 year-old Joseph Lewin admitted in Rockland County Court to sexually abusing a girl under the age of 13 while serving as a gymnastics coach in his gym in Hillburn. He’s also required to register as a sex offender. Lewin was released a few months ago after serving three and a half years in state prison also for sexual abuse of a student, the plea in that case reportedly involved allegations from seven other girls, all students at his gyms in Suffern and Hillburn.

Person Killed After Struck by Train, Another Killed on Thruway

An unidentified person was struck and killed after being hit by a passenger train in Tuxedo yesterday. That’s according to Patch.com. The MTA said it happened just east of the Tuxedo Station shortly after 2am. An investigation is ongoing. The person’s identity has not been released. And not far from there, just about an hour earlier, State Police say they responded to a crash involving a car and a pedestrian on the Thruway southbound, between exit 15-A in Sloatsburg and exit 16 in Harriman. State Police say the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The Thruway was shut down for about four hours for the investigation. No other information was available.

Clarkstown Amends Migrant-Bus Law
The Clarkstown Town Board last night unanimously approved to amend a local law that bans charter bus companies from dropping off migrants without advanced notice. That’s according to News 12. The move comes after dozens of migrants were found living in horrid conditions at a home in New City last fall. Bus operators must apply for a drop-off permit at least five days ahead of time. They have to provide passenger lists and conduct background checks on all passengers or face fines of $750 per passenger and other punishments.
