Now that it’s no longer August, we can tell you August was National Make-A-Will Month. A recent poll said only around 46-percent of Americans have a will, most of whom are over 50. Sam Young of the nonprofit Compassion & Choices says some people have a hard time dealing with the reality that they won’t live forever…
Young says some people assume their last wishes will be left to their families to decide, or they don’t have a lot of assets and figure they don’t need a will. He says both are myths, and only a written will can be used to determine how a person’s possessions will be distributed. The Compassion & Choices website has guides for dementia directives, power of attorney, and other end-of-life-related services. Go to FreeWill.com/CompassionAndChoices, or, just listen to our own Sonia Burgos Crannage from the Suffern law firm of Sichol & Hicks on the second Thursday of each month when she deals with these very topics.
