Lawmakers, Public Safety Officials Vary on Approach to Solving Increased Shootings

Shootings on a usually quiet cul-de-sac in New City. Shootings at a Yonkers bar, and near a Mount Vernon school. Increased shootings in the city. Gun violence is on the rise, and police officials are eager to repeal many of the bail and criminal justice reform laws enacted under the Cuomo administration to help. Rockland Sheriff Lou Falco says he and other public safety officials will be making an aggressive push to convince the governor to change those laws…

Governor Kathy Hochul took part in the Gun Violence Strategies Partnership Task Force with President Biden and New York City Mayor Eric Adams last week. Hochul said governments at all levels need to work together to keep the gun crisis from getting worse, but they also need to recognize the reasons why people turn to violence in the first place…

The NYPD’s crime stats for January show a nearly 39 percent increase in overall crime compared with January 2021, and shooting incidents increased by almost 32 percent. Murder, on the other hand, dropped about 15 percent.
