Ground Broken on Thurgood Marshall Monument in New City

October 6, 2020 by helpdesk1

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Rockland County Thurgood Marshall Human Rights Monument was held yesterday afternoon in New City. Commissioner of Human Rights Constance Frazier said it was believed to be the first time in Rockland County history that an African American Supreme Court Justice was honored for his humanitarian contributions to the county…

Before the famous Brown versus Board of Education case, in which Marshall successfully argued that racial segregation in public schools should be unconstitutional, Marshall worked successfully in Rockland to integrate the Hillburn School system. The monument will be located in Dutch Garden next to the Rockland County Courthouse.
