New York City has been given the green light by the Federal Highway Administration to charge a fee to cars and trucks entering Lower Manhattan. New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced yesterday that congestion pricing will become a reality, CNN reported possibly as soon as next spring. Drivers could be paying as much as $23 for each trip into the Central Business District Tolling Zone below 60th street in Manhattan. Proponents say it’ll help the city’s struggling public transit system and will be better for the environment. Opponents say it’ll unfairly tax Rockland and suburban commuters who have fewer public transit options, and just move ecological issues to lower income neighborhoods.
