The Department of Homeland Security says the COVID pandemic created significant backlogs for state DMVs working to get new cards for residents. Starting May 7th, 2025, every traveler 18 or older will need a REAL-ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card, state-issued enhanced driver’s license, or another TSA-acceptable form of ID at airport security checkpoints for domestic air travel.
