Warning Period for School Bus Camera Safety System Ends, Expect Fines for Passing Stopped School Buses in Rockland

June 12, 2023 by Jeff Lewis

The 30-day warning period is done, now if you’re busted passing a school bus with its lights on and stop arm down you will get fined, and big. Rockland is working with a company called BusPatrol, which uses a sophisticated camera system installed on school buses to help increase safety around them. Rockland County Executive Ed Day says the goal is prevention, but civil penalties will be given to those who violate the law…

The BusPatrol program reportedly has successfully seen decreases of 30 percent of the rate of illegal bus passings annually. It’s estimated that in New York State, 50,000 drivers illegally pass stopped school buses every day.
