Drama Over Hi-Tor Animal Shelter Swirls as Legislature Delays Project from Moving Forward

July 14, 2022 by Jeff Lewis

The drama over the future of the Hi-Tor Animal Care Center in Pomona continues to swirl as costs for a new facility are rising, and the shelter’s president remains under a cloud of legal issues. Rockland County Executive Ed Day is calling out the Legislature and some town supervisors for failing to move the project forward…

Day says construction and material prices have skyrocketed over the last 18 months, doubling the cost of the project. $8 million in county, state and private funds have been earmarked so far, but it’s now estimated to cost between 14 and $17 million. The shelter has been in Pomona for about a half-century. A ceremonial groundbreaking event was held last October. Legislature Minority Leader Lon Hofstein says concerns over the money, who would run the shelter and its potential location are current sticking points.
