COVID-19 Won’t Stop NYS Legislature’s Work

Though the governor suggested over the weekend that the state’s legislative session is over, an area lawmaker is saying, hang on, we can still vote on bills remotely. Though the session is set to end in June, North Rockland state senator James Skoufis says the legislature needs to be able to meet, whether in-person or virtually, to handle the fallout of the coronavirus crisis…

Executive Director of Common Cause/NY Susan Lerner says though the Governor has been issuing plenty of executive orders, that can’t be the only way the state goes about its business…

Both the Assembly and the Senate have passed resolutions and rules changes that will allow lawmakers to vote remotely on a limited or as-needed basis, but neither house has specifically indicated exactly when session will resume. The $177 billion budget was approved last week. It included changes to campaign finance rules, banned flavored e-cigarettes, and held school aid steady.
