New York Democrats are cheering yesterday’s decision by the New York Court of Appeals allowing the state to redraw its congressional map. The move is thought to benefit Democrats, who are looking to win back the House next year. The state’s Independent Redistricting Commission needs to draw a new map by the end of February, with the state Legislature getting the final say. Rockland Congressman Mike Lawler of the 17th district, a Republican who won his seat last year, called the decision “corrupt Albany politics at its worst.” Former Rockland Congressman Democrat Mondaire Jones, who is running to try and get his seat back, said the temporary congressional maps used last year were the work of a Republican special master instead of the Commission as they should have been. Governor Kathy Hochul said the move will ensure all New Yorkers are fairly and equitably represented by elected officials.
