9 Suicides for NYPD so far this Year; Help is Available

August 16, 2019 by helpdesk1

Nine members of the NYPD have died by suicide since the beginning of the year, including one from Yonkers this week. It’s a staggering number that has officials trying to figure out how to overcome the stigma of asking for help. In Rockland, sheriff Lou Falco told “The Morning Show” the PBA has ways of helping fellow officers in times of need…

On last week’s “CLEMental Health Program” with Peter Clemente, Dr. Robert Douglas, Jr, the founder and Executive Director for the National Police Suicide Foundation, said a study last year found for every line-of-duty death there are four suicides. Dr. Douglas said many officers suffer from PTSD and have a hard time transitioning from street life to home life…

35 year-old Johnny Rios of Yonkers shot himself in the head in his home earlier this week, and just two days ago, 56-year-old Robert Echeverria killed himself in his Queens home. If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255 or reach out to the Crisis Text Line by texting the word ‘Home’ to 741741. Here in the county, you can call the Help Line of the Rockland chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness at 845-359-8787.
