The Rev. Louis Sanders, who led St. Charles AME Church in Sparkill for almost four decades, died Thursday. Sanders was the church’s pastor from 1981 to 2017 when he retired and moved with his wife, Connie, to Roanoke, Virginia. In a statement, Rockland County Legislator Toney Earl, who had known Sanders since the 1970s, said “he fought against racial segregation and did so much for so many.” He served as an Air Force chaplain, and retired in 2003 as a lieutenant colonel. He was honored with a Rockland County Buffalo Soldiers Award in 2014, and inducted into the County Civil Rights Hall of Fame in 2009. He was 76.
