Questions continue to mount over how cases of COVID-19 were handled at nursing homes. Earlier this month the state reported more than 1,700 previously undisclosed deaths at nursing homes and adult care facilities. Elderly advocacy groups have called for greater transparency over nursing home COVID-19 cases, and CBS News reported they’ve criticized an April 1st state law granting some immunity from civil and criminal liability to hospitals and nursing homes. Stony Point and Orange County Assemblyman Colin Schmitt has also asked for an independent federal investigation into COVID-19 related deaths at New York State nursing homes, claiming the state’s orders to accept infected patients may have helped the spread the virus.
COVID-19 numbers now, the state now has confirmed around 343,000 total cases of coronavirus across the state and 22,170 deaths. In Rockland, the state says we’ve got over 12,600 reported cases, and the Rockland Health Department confirms 594 deaths here in the county.
