New York State Passes Law Limiting on Social Media Companies

July 17, 2024 by Jeff Lewis

There’s been a push recently to try to limit the effects of social media on kids. They use their smartphones to visit various social media sites, prompting New York’s governor to sign a bill last month to try to limit social media companies’ grips on kids. At a press conference last month, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said it started before the pandemic, but that only made it worse for kids…

Rockland State Senator Bill Weber of the 38th district says he voted for the bill and hopes it makes a positive change…

At last month’s press conference, State Attorney General Letitia James said the bill was needed to protect New York kids…

The “Safe for Kids Act” that the governor signed last month requires companies to restrict “addictive feeds” for kids under 18. It would also bar notifications between midnight and 6am without parental consent. On Monday, Hochul kicked off what she is calling a “statewide listening tour” meeting with teachers and school superintendents to get their input on the issues around kids and social media.
