Neighbors of a North Rockland home that could become a house of worship have reportedly filed their own federal suit against the Orthodox Jewish congregation that owns the home. The Journal News says that group is currently suing the town of Haverstraw and members of its planning board over the rejection of their plans to turn the single-family home into a synagogue. The suit, filed by neighbors of the home on Riverglen Street in Thiells, targets the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act. It’s the same home that prompted antisemitic comments in November 2021 at a land-use meeting that went viral. Last month, Haverstraw supervisor Howard Phillips told “The Morning Show” that that ugly tirade should never have happened…
Last August, the Haverstraw planning board rejected the synagogue’s plans by a three-to-two vote. The town, planning board and the three who voted “no,” face a federal lawsuit and millions in damages.
