The Haverstraw Town Planning Board and the Town Board each voted unanimously Monday to approve a settlement with an Orthodox Jewish congregation, clearing the path for a home to become a house of worship. That’s according to The Journal News. Town officials felt they’d likely lose a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by the owners of the Riverglen Drive home, costing the town millions. A suit filed by neighbors of the planned synagogue will reportedly go forward. That suit is challenging the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, which the home’s owners were using as support for their goal to make the home a house of worship. That suit was filed in December in U.S. District Court for the Southern District. The congregation is expected to respond before the end of the month.
