Long Lines Persist at Town Halls During Early Voting
Lines continue to snake around the four town halls in Rockland that are doing the early voting. Over in Clarkstown it’s been so crowded, Clarkstown supervisor George Hoehmann says they’ve had to shut down a small stretch of road between the town hall and the police station next door…
Hoehmann also urges Clarkstown residents to flip their ballot over and vote on the mall referendum. Early voting can be done at town halls in Clarkstown, Haverstraw, Orangetown and Ramapo, and you don’t have to be a resident of that particular town to vote at any town hall. You can vote today from 9AM until 5PM, tomorrow from 12 noon to 8PM, Friday 9 to 5, and Saturday and Sunday from 9 until 2PM. There’s no early voting Monday, and Election Day is next Tuesday.
Positive COVID Cases Temporarily Shutter Some Rockland Schools
Positive COVID-19 cases in Rockland schools have created some temporary shutdowns. Students at Pearl River High School will have to quarantine until November 6th after a student there tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week. News 12 says North Rockland High school is closed until next Wednesday. Lohud.com reports Sloatsburg Elementary School and Suffern Middle School in the Suffern Central School District will be closed until tomorrow. RP Connor School in Suffern Central and Clarkstown School District’s Birchwood School in West Nyack are also reopening tomorrow. Link Elementary School in Clarkstown is on 100% remote instruction until Monday. Nine staff members there had to be placed in quarantine.
California’s been added to New York’s COVID 14-day quarantine travel advisory. No areas have been removed. Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania also qualify, but for them, the state only suggests practical, non-essential travel. The only states NOT on the list are Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.
COVID-19 by the numbers now, here in Rockland, we’ve got 24 in the hospital confirmed with coronavirus, and a total of 915 active cases. The state says since the pandemic began, we’ve had a total of 17,832 reported cases, 72 more than Tuesday, and the death toll is unchanged from yesterday at 684.
Orangetown Residents Float Ideas for Struggling HNA Conference Center in Palisades
With the HNA Conference Center in Palisades China-based owners struggling to find a buyer and the town of Orangetown looking to build a new town hall and community center, some area residents are suggesting a solution to both parties’ problems. The COVID situation has forced the town to temporarily shelve its plans for a community center, though they are continuing ahead to look for a good way to replace its aging town hall just off the Palisades Parkway in Orangeburg. Town resident Susan Nemestee said at last week’s town board meeting that moving everyone from the current town hall to the HNA Center could be highly cost-effective…
Carol Baxter of Palisades agreed, the idea could work…
Orangetown supervisor Teresa Kenny says the town, meanwhile, is looking to see if there’s anyone out there who is interested in the property as-is…
Kenny says the property has been used for film shoots recently, and that’s a money-maker. The current town hall was built nearly 60 years ago. The town was also looking to put a community center on land owned at the former Rockland Psychiatric Center campus.
