Report: Federal Judge Rules Rockland Village Doesn’t Have to Pay Damages to Orthodox Jewish Group

A federal judge says a Rockland village won’t have to pay damages to an Orthodox Jewish coalition that claimed discrimination prior to the village’s adoption of a more houses-of-worship-friendly zoning code. The Journal News says the Orthodox Jewish Coalition of Chestnut Ridge sought monetary damages claiming its zoning was restrictive. Prior to the new law, houses of worship had to be on properties that were at least five acres. Several congregations have since submitted plans in Chestnut Ridge seeking approvals and permits.
