Fire Levels Building at Spring Valley Senior Assisted Living Facility, One Resident Killed, Firefighter Missing

Update 2:34pm: A Rockland County spokesman says a resident of Evergreen Court for Adults has been located and is unharmed. Light towers and other resources are being brought in so that work at the facility can continue overnight.

Update 8:53am: One was killed and two firefighters injured and one firefighter was unaccounted for after a fire at a senior assisted living facility in Spring Valley early this morning. Firefighters are still on the scene of the blaze and is not yet under control. It broke out around 1:00 this morning at the “Evergreen Court For Adults” facility located at 65 Lafayette Street. 23 of Rockland’s 26 volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene. Director of Fire and Emergency Services Chris Kear says 20-30 residents had to be rescued by firefighters. Kear would not speculate on the cause of the fire, which is being investigated by the Spring Valley Police Department, State Police and the Rockland Sheriff’s department. Kear says the missing firefighter was believed to be in a portion of the building that had collapsed. No information on the resident who was killed was available.

Earlier: Firefighters are on the scene of a major blaze at a senior assisted living facility in Spring Valley. The fire broke out around 1:00 this morning at the “Evergreen Court For Adults” facility located at 65 Lafayette Street. Published reports say there are several injuries and officials are still trying to account for all the residents of facility. YeshivaWorld.com reported local Yeshiva school buses were keeping residents warm and taking them to other locations. 23 of Rockland’s 26 volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene. Information on the cause of the fire and any specific injuries were not available.
