NY State Lawmakers Look to Curb Governor’s Executive Powers

State Republican lawmakers and many Democrats as well, are lining up to remove the governor’s added executive powers, granted last year at the start of the COVID pandemic, but they’re at odds on how that should be done. Rockland assemblyman Michael Lawler says though the introduction of hostile amendments by GOP lawmakers didn’t pass earlier this week, he feels Democrats need to get on board or come up with their own bill to reign in the governor…

Rockland state senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick says the legislature should have more of a role in COVID decision-making, while recognizing the pandemic should still qualify as an emergency. Cuomo’s added powers are set to expire April 30th unless they are renewed. Some want to end them sooner, while others want them to be curbed though not removed entirely.
