Sheriff: 7-Eleven Suspect Dies Following Hanging in Rockland County Jail

The Washingtonville man accused of running down a pregnant mom at the Garnerville 7-Eleven in February last year has died while awaiting trial at the Rockland County Jail. The Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division Corrections Officers found 36 year-old Jason Mendez attempting suicide by hanging while they were making scheduled checks of the housing area. He was alone in his cell. Officers performed CPR until Emergency Medical crews arrived. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was sent to the Rockland County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death. The incident is under investigation. Melissa Deloatch was killed in February 2019 after Mendez allegedly argued with her husband over smoking near their children. Mendez was being held in the county jail on $1 million bail.
