Orange County DA ID’s Victim in Cornwall Shooting Involving Off-Duty Ramapo Officer

New York State Police and the Orange County D-A are investigating what reportedly lead an off-duty Ramapo police officer to fatally shoot his neighbor during an altercation in front of the officer’s home Monday night in Cornwall. The Times Herald-Record says the D-A did not identify the officer involved, or provide any details about the encounter with the victim, Erick Gilmore. They did say they found a knife at the scene. The officer used what was described as “an off-duty firearm, not his service gun,” and police said they were not aware of any issues the two men may have had. Orange County D-A David Hoovler will present the case to a grand jury to see if any charges against the officer are warranted. It’s not clear when the grand jury could get the case, as the COVID-19 pandemic has created a backlog of cases.
