Ramapo to Offer Day Camp for Summer; Sleep-away Camps in NY to be Closed

Four out of Rockland’s five towns have cancelled their summer camps this year. That’s not the case in Ramapo, where the summer camps will be different than in years’ past but at least the kids will have something to do, along with pools and playgrounds which will also open. Supervisor Michael Specht says the town owns its own camp property, Camp Scuffy, so they weren’t dependent on using schools, which remain closed…

The governor announced last week that local municipalities could open public pools and playgrounds at their discretion so long as they follow state guidelines. New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker announced Friday that sleep-away summer camps, however, would be prohibited from operating. Dr. Zucker said it’s too hard to manage social distancing and there are too many risks at overnight camps. He said even a single positive case could be overwhelming.
