Rockland Launches Mosquito Control Program

“Murder Hornets” aren’t a problem for the county – yet – but those pesky mosquitoes are starting to make their return as the summer heads our way. Yesterday the Rockland County Health Department began its Mosquito Control Program, treating catch basins and storm drains to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in standing water. Mosquitoes can sometimes spread potentially dangerous diseases like West Nile Virus or Zika Virus. Keep an eye out for county vehicles as they are doing the treatment work and avoid parking over storm drains. You should also regularly check your property for areas of stagnant water and replace them with fresh water daily. Kids’ toys, buckets, wheelbarrows are often culprits. The county usually gives out Mosquito Dunks to help keep their population under control but they’re not available right now.
