Lesson Learned: New City Dollar Store Accepts Guide Dogs for the Blind after Encounter with Friend of “The Morning Show with Steve & Jeff”

Fans of the show heard last week how Steve’s pal, Milton Koja, a musician from New City, was turned away earlier this month from the dollar store in the New City Shop Rite shopping center because his guide dog, Nash, was not permitted to enter the store. That, of course, is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Milton met with county officials from the Human Rights Commission to discuss the situation. Clarkstown supervisor George Hoehmann says the store owner has now learned what the law requires, and he’s posted a sign in the window showing he accepts guide dogs in his shop…

Milton says regardless of the law, people should be used to guide dogs for the blind by now…

Ed White is blind and runs a newsstand at a courthouse in White Plains. He says he’s also been targeted by similar discrimination…

Mike Robinson is president of the National Federation for the Blind in New York, and says people who go into business need to familiarize themselves with the laws…

Carlos Martinez heads up BRIDGES, formerly known as the Rockland Independent Living Center. He visited the store owner and says he knows he made a mistake…
