Rockland Legislature Approves Budget, Grants Raises

Rockland lawmakers gave themselves, the county executive, the sheriff and others raises when they adopted the budget by a 15-2 vote Tuesday night. That’s according to the Journal News, which said the $730 million budget, which raises county property taxes about $40 on average next year, wasn’t changed much from what County Executive Ed Day submitted two months ago. The 17 legislators will see their salaries jump to $49,500, up almost $17,000. The county executive gets an increase of nearly 30-grand to $184,500, and the sheriff’s getting a $37,000 raise to $180,000. Day could veto any of the changes within five days. The Legislature then has until December 20th to override any vetoes. Though the plan’s been adopted, a public hearing on the raises is scheduled for December 17th.
