Stewart-Cousins will be the first woman, and first African-American woman, to lead a majority conference in the state Legislature. Democrats regained control of the state Senate on Election Day and will have a 40-to-23 edge over the GOP next year. The Associated Press reported several bills long-blocked by Senate Republicans could face easy passage with Democrats in charge, including laws covering abortion rights, voting reform and legalization of recreational pot.
