Staying Green: Don’t Toss Pens that Work and Recycle Plastic Straws

This summer, plastic straws and plastic bags became the focus of environmentalists, as cities and towns across the country wrestle with whether to outright ban them or charge more for them. Though straws reportedly make up only about 2,000 tons of the nearly 9 million tons of the ocean’s plastic waste, Starbucks, for example, has vowed to eliminate single-use plastic straws from all their shops by 2020. Howard Phillips heads up the Rockland County Solid Waste Management Authority, and says straws can be recycled very easily, just make sure you put them into plastic water bottles…

And as back-to-school shopping gets underway, Phillips says look around the house first for pens before you buy new ones. He says 6 billion pens each year are thrown away that actually work, adding more waste to the pile that’s just not necessary.
