NJT Officials: We Underestimated Agency’s Issues

New Jersey Transit executives were grilled yesterday by state lawmakers for the authority’s poor performance of late. Published reports said NJT Executive Director Kevin Corbett admitted he misread the scope of the issues there when he took office with governor Phil Murphy in January. Riders on the Pascack Valley line have had to cope with cancelled trains, engineer shortages, fewer express lines, delayed safety installations and fare increases. Transportation Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti testified no immediate fix is in sight. Already a decade behind schedule, NJT is spending the next four months or more installing the positive train control safety braking feature. It was announced earlier this month that the original end-of-year deadline likely won’t be met.
